[FSPA] Ghostbuster Proposal--CarPool

By rule we have disabled the claw in Demo Man at VBH. However, this is a software setting that we can change.

This is extremely different. You are talking about the game offering something that you are then not allowed to shoot. To me as a league administrator, a rule to disallow players from taking what the machine is legally giving them is against the spirit of our rules.

Now, if there was a software setting that gave a different award for that skill shot, I'd be all for it. However, you just cannot impose a rule to disallow players from going for a particular legal shot.

Slightly similar situation: We had Super Mario at VBH a number of years back, and there was a relatively safe combo which kept awarding 5M points and basically wrecked the game. However, we never said that you couldn't go for that combo. Did we put a 2x4 under the back legs to try and make the shot even harder, of course we did! But, we never would make a ruling that you couldn't go for that shot, as boring as it made the game and as long as it played because of the safety of that combo. Of course, that's not a video mode, but it's a matter of finding something that makes a game boring and not fun to play and trying to change the rules by telling people not to go for a particular type of shot.

Also, if you would impose this rule, what would the penalty be if someone mistakenly chose the video mode skill shot and made it? DQ would be extremely harsh here because it isn't cheating as no known bug in the software is being manipulated. This is the code of the machine, and you just have to live with it as long as it is league eligible.

Should we have disabled Bats in BSD? Not the same at all. Bats is hard to start. It is a valuable feature and if you earned it, you deserved it. It doesn’t require you to avoid other modes in order to play it again on the next ball. That part of GB is pretty unique. .

Or big bang in DI? Nope. Not the same. It is a reward for certain events in normal play.

Holodeck? You’re getting close there. I believe it has been DQ’ in some competition.

Or force people to play modes in STTNG instead of multiball all day? Not even close.

Now, if you want a good example, how about the Cryo Claw on Demo Man?

How about that one? Anybody ever disable that one?

I think anyone who plays for this alone is only hurting themselves.

I mean are we really saying "Hey, I can't win if people do that... so can you not do that?"

Learn the scoring strategies and pick one that works for you. Feel free to play your own, I'll still work on finding my own to beat you.

the problem isn't that it makes the game unfair, it's that it makes the game unfun. 90% of the players in our league are not going to break 100 million on that game unless they play video mode on all three balls. a lot of players strongly dislike playing it for that reason. it's just not entertaining pr exciting to have a skillshot video mode determine the winner for the vast majority of games.

Given everyone has equal opportunity for the feature... and the game already has changed so its not available on every plunge. I don't see the point.

If you want to take that risk for video mode, and then face qualifying modes... that's your choice.
If you want to qualify a mode and play that strategy... do so.
If you want to go for multipliers and play that way.. do so.

There is no disparity between player position or opportunity. So i don't see why the need to nerf the feature.

It's not like it's the only way to win...

Suggestion has been made that we adopt a local rule that nobody can select video mode for skill shot; or that nobody can select it on Ball 1.

This is a pretty good way to salvage a great game for competition. The 1-ball variation opens up even more strategic choices—Play a mode, or not?

I think Bob was against this by the time we finished on Thursday, but he liked it when we started (Player 4).

We were playing the other night and it worked out pretty well without video:
