To use the same example, DM's trigger flippers /do/ give you bonus points, but everyone can use them, so it's cool. I'm 95% sure that you need to hold the game's left flipper & app's left flipper at the same time. When it's successfully connected, your info appears in the top-left corner of the game's screen...
