<div>In an seriousness, effective points are mainly a mechanism for approximating performance. It’s easy to say that someone who is missing and forfeits all four games should stay in the same group. And that’s what happens most of the time! The trouble comes
when there is a tie and how to move people on the ladder. </div>

<div>Yes, ladder, not groups. It’s easy to think about moving groups, but in reality, groups are made up from the league ladder. By locking people into a spot on the ladder, you prevent the movement necessary to keep the ladder a living, breathing enterprise.</div>

<div>The other thing to consider is what happens when someone leaves early for whatever reason. The effective points allow us to approximate performance to properly set the ladder after the meet is over. It’s not about rewarding/punishing someone who is missing,
but more about approximating the ladder in the best possible way so that the next meet’s groupings are as fair as possible.</div>
