Good summation Edan. I agree the white board system at MMs worked well. In my time at RZ I don't think an offical stance on how to prioritize has really been established (in part as we use to have more games).

I'm not the SLO of this league, Rich, Scott, and I filled in for Bob last night to get the season started. I just wanted to elaborate on the groupings, play order, and address some questions that came up from last night.

As for the delayed start, week 1 typically gets started later than the official start time. This is because the roster and the groups needs to be configured manually and to add in any players at the last minute. The rest of the season will start close to the official start time (8:00 for RedZone) as the groupings will be automated. We had 23 players on the roster before league, then we had 31 players at the official start time, so we needed to rework the groups to accommodate the increased player count. We ended up getting started at 8:30 which is not uncommon for week 1 for a league with this many players.

We have 9 groups on 6 machines which means that there will be queues behind machines, and there could be multiple groups waiting for a machine. When I ran MM, I would require the groups to play in the assigned order on their score sheets (this is part of the rules). I would occasionally give certain groups permission to go out of order, but this was on a case by case basis if there were abnormally long games holding several groups. The reason why I prefer groups to not play out of order is to prevent queues from building up on another machine which could hold back the league longer than if they stayed in the assigned order.

I anticipated that having 9 groups on 6 machines would be an issue, so I asked groups 1-3 to wait for another group to play that machine before they play their game. The issue with that was that groups 1 and 2 didn't have a group to wait on, so those machines were idle until I recognized the problem and gave them permission to go ahead. In hindsight, I should have asked groups 3-5 to wait, so that all the machines would have been occupied at the start.

At MM we had a whiteboard system that worked pretty well for streamlining the queues, as there are no questions about which group was waiting first etc... We could have a similar system with either paper or a small whiteboard.

Next week will be much smoother, since we will get started on time, the roster and initial groups are already configured, and we will make sure to have the right groups wait on the first game.

While there were some frustrations last night, we had a good start to this season with a new game lineup, new players, and we have 31 players on our roster.

And that would probably work with a better group to game ratio but 9 groups on 6 games is just a cluster. Not to mention two of the machines were game 1 for only a single group, and they were groups 1 and 2 so asking the groups 1-3 to hold back doesn't actually do anything if no lower seeds have that game pick as their number one. It still consigns 6 groups to fight over 4 games, on the very first round. And looks like that's true of all of group 1 and 2's picks -- no lower seed has their game picks for the same number game. I'm sure there's some reasoning for this, but in practice it was sort of a nightmare.

If this helps, we've handled this in the past at VBH with what we called "wait states." If we had say, 10 groups and 9 machines, then two groups would be playing the same machine for game 1 and possibly other games. The group that waits would have a big black bar drawn on the sheet above their group, as some sort of visual indicator that they are the waiting group and the other group goes first.

IIRC it had mixed success, but it was at least an attempt to flesh out the complete order for the night.

After the confusion last night of who has game priority I ask that The SLO make an offical statement as to how this will be handled. I would suggest that it be groups are not to play out of order, what game is it for the group (ie 1st, 2nd, 3rd) low game gets priority, then lower group gets priority. Thanks
